Alex riding Titan: A horse she raised and trained
Our resident trainer is Alexandra Wolff who specializes in the training of young sport horses as well as teaching any stage rider. She is currently teaching three young ladies between the ages of 7 and 11, and also works with several college students who range in ability from beginner to advanced levels. She is very good with retraining thoroughbreds and working with young horses and has started several of her own that have gone on to many different arenas. Alex has been showing in Texas for the last ten years and would love to help new people get started and share her enthusiasm for horses with them.
We are also offering lessons from William Saavedra, an excellent jumping trainer and rider. Please call him for more information :979-492-0143
Lessons
- Lessons are available daily from 8am – 7pm
- Lessons cost $40
- You may ride your own horse, or take a lesson on one of several horses owned by the barn
- Tardiness will result in a shorter amount of time spent with the trainer
Riders who can tack up on their own are asked to arrive early so that they have their horse tacked up and ready to ride by the time of their lesson. Also, riders who can warm up their horse on their own and are coming for jumping lessons are encouraged to arrive early enough to warm up on their own so that they have more jumping time.
What to expect for a student who has never saddled or ridden a horse
First time students learn to properly groom their horse and saddle it under the supervision of the instructor. They are taught about the different behaviors that horses can and will exhibit and what reactions should and should not be made. Students are encouraged to wean themselves off of the trainer and are rewarded for grooming their horses and getting ready by themselves by having more time in the saddle. After initial grooming practices and saddling has been done, riders are then introduced to riding in the round pen on a lunge line until control and confidence are established. After this is mastered, they are moved into the larger outdoor arena for more challenging exercises.
Training
Alex has been riding and training horses for several years; her greatest accomplishment has been her horse Louie. She got Louie as a weanling and has done all of his training herself with a little help from a few people along the way. Louie is now 11 years old and is jumping 4′ courses without a blink (and at the end of the day can be ridden bareback by children, galloping around the arena). As a four-year-old, Louie and Alex qualified and showed at the American Eventing Championships. He has not been shown much recently, but when he is he places either Champion or Reserve at every show.
Alex is a patient rider with a calm seat and has learned over the years that there are many different ways to help teach horses balance, obedience, and trust. She has learned that there is never just one answer to a horse’s behavior and can help fix most problems occurring between horse and rider.
Currently Alex is looking for new horses to add to her training program. If you have a horse that needs help or needs to be started, take advantage of our new training and boarding packages. Please contact us for more of our philosophies on training and starting young horses.
